The first company I started was in the education technology space, and it was started with a great friend of mine. Our dream with Rift was to transform the education system by introducing holistic assessment that far outclassed GPAs and standardized test scores. Unfortunately, we shut the business down after about almost a year of working on it, but the lessons learned were substantial. Most importantly, I credit my co-founder, Blake, with the reason I ever actually quit my job to pursue entrepreneurship. Without a partner to go after a vision I'm not sure I ever would've struck out on my own, and now I'm not sure I'll ever go back.After Rift was shut down I started Progage, a sports marketing company with a focus on creating meaningful partnerships between athletes and brands. I came up with the idea in conjunction with two long-time friends, one of whom plays in the NFL and had an inside look at gaps in the sports marketing industry. Luckily, we were quite naive to many of the quirks of the industry when we launched the business, or else we may have never started it in the first place. We pivoted from our first revenue model within six months and have iterated into service lines that are valuable and in need. Today, we serve brands by helping them create unique marketing campaigns with athletes, universities by helping them make sure their student-athletes are well-supported as they pursue NIL deals, and athletes by giving them first class marketing and media representation.
